BOX X5 Phono Preamp
By
Scott J Kunkel
When I received the BOX X5 unit, I was delighted the physical dimensions were the same, or about the same as the V3 mono blocks and the P4 Preamp. This made a nice little stack of high quality HiFi components.
As with all Fosi products, plug and play!
Connecting the unit was a no brainer. I connected my ProJect Essential turntable with a Ortofon Red MM cartridge; not top of the line, but pretty darn good!
I connected the X5 to my Fosi P4 Preamp which drove my Fosi V3 mono blocks which in turn drove my ELAC UniFi UB5 speakers.
I usually test new equipment with my “go to” sources, whether vinyl, CD, hi-res streaming, in this test, vinyl.
The list of music I listened to were: Dire Straits, Peter Gabriel, Billie Eilish, Pink Floyd , Bob Dylan and various jazz and classical. All vinyl selections were master copies, half speed masters or re-masters.
Since I already my Fluance PA10 phono Preamp connected, I listened to it first, then compared the Fosi BOX X
I,ve always been happy with the warm sound of the fluance phono preamp. The Fluance seemed to “brighten up” the sound, and made it a little more “punchy.”
Next up, the Fosi BOX X5. As mentioned, set up was quick and easy, less than 5 minutes.
I set the switch on back to MM(moving magnet) and the little gain dial to the lowest setting. The sound was comparable to the Fluance amp, warm and punchy. I was very impressed with the clarity and soundstage. I was impressed. I then turned the gain setting to the highest setting that pertained to the MM setting. The sound was noticeably more pronounced and “in your face,” I’ll keep it in that setting from here on out!
AS with all my Fosi products and I have several, this unit did not disappoint. Unless you are spending hundreds on audio equipment, you would be hard pressed to differentiate between them and Fosi components.
In addition, as you see from the pics below, you don’t need big expensive audio racks; a plant stand will do just fine.
Fosi Audio continues to produce high quality, audiophile grade equipment at a price for everyone!
FYI… The BOX X5 is the unit sitting on top!
