On my desktop, I use a MBPro and a pair of excellent PSB Alpha passive speakers. So I bought a Fosi V3 stereo amp, which is a fantastic product at an amazing price, but I have to take the signal out of the Mac through the headphone port to the RCA inputs, so there are two volume controls in the path. That makes an audiophile unhappy and also I have to turn the Mac volume way down or I can only use the bottom 10% of the V3 volume range.
The only un-volume-controlled output from the Mac is (I think) digital USB.
So, my proposal:A little Fosi box with a USB-C input and speaker outputs on the back, and a volume control on the front. (Also maybe a line pre-out for a powered sub?) That means it needs to include a DAC. I could get a separate DAC (and probably will) but my desktop is already crowded.
