Amplifier Fosi Audio V3 Mono review

When I read about the Fosi Audio V3 Mono power amplifier, I have to admit that I was skeptical. More so, when I saw the dimensions of this tiny thing. The modest number on the price tag also didn’t inspire a lot of confidence to be honest. In reality, the V3 Mono turned out to be a tiny high quality power house that definitely punches above its weight. Well done Fosi Audio!

I wanted to downsize my audio setup a bit (except for my speakers). Free up some money in the proces. Get rid of the bigger and more expensive components and swap them with much more affordable and less power hungry components. The V3 Mono had big shoes to fill. I had two powerful modern class A/B mono blocks. Power delivery; 350W at 2Ω with a big toroidal transformer. So yeah, quite strong competition.

Both my V3 Mono’s have the original 48V/5A power supply. Together with the ZD3 (another excellent Fosi Audio product) and two fans, they fit nicely on one shelve. Impossible, with big mono blocks and a full size preamplifier. No softly humming transformers and no DC filters needed with the Fosi Audio V3 Mono’s. Plug and play, instantly on and dead silent. I always use a balanced connection between my preamp and power amps.

It would be strange if the V3 Mono’s sound exactly the same as the big mono blocks, and they don’t. The V3 Mono’s sound different. Leaner, tighter, a bit less relaxed and warm maybe. Bass extension probably is a bit less too. However, their sound signature isn’t bad at all. They sound transparent, dynamic and they can certainly deliver the low end via my big vintage floor standing speakers. Depending on the source material (and speakers), soundstage and channel separation are very good.

The way I listen to music, they never run out of power. In my opinion, the sound quality isn’t better or worse than my previous power amplifiers, just different. And after a couple of days, when my brain had time adjust, it just became the new standard. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything and that’s a very good sign.

Every time I switch on the little black boxes and listen to a good quality recording/production (stream or compact disc), I am pleasantly surprised by the sound quality they deliver. How is this possible? Well, with modern technology, clever engineering and good quality electronic components I guess. In my setup (check my signature), these V3 Mono's deliver the goods.
