Streamer S3 Streamer Development Log

Thanks.

That's good news for my 15VA power supply. That's the measurement I was expecting from the folks at Fosi.
I'm confident that using the balanced output won't increase power consumption much.
Has anyone measured the power consumption using the balanced output?

I tested an S3 in my system. Unfortunately, it has lower volume gain than my Wiim Mini. My amplifier has a low gain (around 5). It is loud enough when I played Amazon HD through Wiim Mini. However, with S3, some of the music pieces are just not loud enough when I play them through Google Cast. Since Wiim Mini has the option to choose different output levels in their software. I would recommend Fosi to adopt the same approach and add more gain options for us with low gain amplifiers. I assume this is easy to do and should be included in the bear future release.

A left and right channel balance control is also needed for the future software release.

I have two full range Zenith drivers from '60s mounted on open baffles. They don't have the same gain, I need a balance control just like a real pre-amplifier. The drivers also have peaks that need to be tamed. So for the future room correction and equalizers, please include adjustments for each individual channel in addition to just stereo. If you have any questions, please check Wiim software and see how they did it.

For the subwoofer management, please be sure to add delay time to accommodate location difference between the subwoofer and the main speakers.

Is anyone having issue with tidal connect?
If play any music over 44.1kHz there is constant cutting out. I am stuck playing music at a lower resolution and it's annoying.

My issue with Tidal is that when I connect to the S3 when it is on standby, it wakes the device up, but disconnects instantly and I have to connect to it again to start streaming. Another issue but I think it is more related to the Tidal app itself, that after a while, it loses connection to the streamer and while the stream continues to play, I have to reconnect to Tidal Connect in the app to get the current track, queue, progress, etc.

Using HDMI Arc also have rare occasions when the sound starts sputtering/popping and I have to change input and back to Arc to "reconnect" and solve the issue.

Also a bit confused now if there will be a DSP based filter for the subwoofer output? Initially it was a clear yes from Fosi side, that this will be available as an OTA upgrade, but last time YuTing mentioned, that bass management will only be available in future interations/models. While I understand that hardware specific modifications will not be done to the S3, I think it is a bit misleading that the promised software feature will be missing too. It was one of the future features promised, that sold me this device. Are there any news about it?

thanks,Currently, the bass management for S3 involves hardware modifications. Since the MCU outputs only a single audio channel, this issue cannot be resolved solely through software updates. We have incorporated this feature into our streaming amplifier product (S5), implementing hardware-based filtering for bass management. Regarding the other issues you mentioned above, I will ask our testing colleagues to retest and verify whether they exist. Thank you for your feedback.

thanks We do not encounter this issue in our testing environment. Based on our experience, the problem you described is more likely related to network connectivity—you may try switching to a different network environment.

Should I be able to connect my TV ARC HDMI to the S3 and output to my Dynaudio XEO2 active speakers via RCA? I'm not getting any sound at all.

Thank you for your interest in Fosi Audio’s streaming products.
I’m sorry to say that the S3 does not currently support DSD playback. This is because the streaming module cannot process DSD files—all audio must first pass through this module for processing and control.
That said, there is no file-count limit for DLNA playback.
Thanks again for your support!

Hi everyone,

Continuing with this topic, I have received an S3 unit and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it does support DSD, or at least, that is what the Fosi app indicates.

To comment on other aspects related to the device, my main interest is playing back files stored on a hard drive connected to a Raspberry Pi via DLNA. I must say the device sounds very good — Fosi has done a great job. It is true that the app still has a long way to go. I come from using Lyrion Media Server, and it would be fantastic if Fosi steered its development in that direction.

Hopefully in future versions, in addition to improvements to the equalizer, they can include other things such as: playlist management, improved library browsing, proper display of album artwork (in my case, many covers are not showing), the ability to link the library to external databases covering artists and discographies, etc.

I know the Fosi team always listens to us and will do their best to improve the product.

Best regards

I have played DSD files via UPnP and can confirm that it works. I am outputting to XLR. That said, UPnP interface in the Fosi app is still a bit buggy in navigation.

Check that the "RCA/XLR" output is selected. I accidentally selected optical and drove myself crazy for a while trying to figure out why I was suddenly getting no sound.

Also make sure that your TV is set to output PCM audio and not bitstream. As far as I know, the S3 cannot decode Dolby, for example.

I am set up like you, using HDMI ARC to the S3 and it works fine.
