I wouldn't say I'm an expert in the area but I do have practical experience
I have tried several streamers and reclockers over the years.
My 4 way active horn system is very dependant on the WAF Najda 3 in / 8 out, DSP XO DAC pre that does the crossovers, time/phase aligning and PEQ correction.
This is currently an older unit with just SPdif input (optical and coax) and native I2S input. It also has a rather good analogue input too.
So to use the Sonore Ultrarendu streamer (I first borrowed and later bought), I had to convert from USB out to SPdif somehow.
Others had recommended the Gustard U18 to do this. I tried the Ultrarendu and Gustard U18 combo and found it to be the best I'd heard so far!
I also tried a I2S over HDMI to native I2S converter and used the i2S over HDMI output on the Gustard U18, but could not find any improvement!
I recently tried a miniDSP Flex 8 XO pre with the similar capabilities as Najda. I found I preferred the sound without the Gustard U18!
Just USB out from the Ultrarendu and straight into the miniDSP Flex 8 USB input.
Ultimately I preferred the sound of the Najda DSP unit over the miniDSP though!
After that I got a Wiim Pro streamer that only does SPdif out. It is capable of bit perfect streaming - just don't use the analogue outputs for anything hifi on the Pro model - it has a very basic DAC!
As with the Ultrarendu, I found an external linear power supply improved the sound quality, better dynamic and sonic cleanness.
I also tried the Wiim Ultra that has USB output for streaming. It has a 230V mains input, so impossible to change the power supply.
I did not find that better than my Ultrarendu or the Wiim Pro in my system! The streamer part is the same as the Pro! The USB output was what I wanted to test..
Back to the Wiim Pro with Linear power and Optical SPdif (optical works best on my system with the Wiim Pro), I have a sound that I really like.
I've also tried 5V 5.8Ah battery power. Prefer the Linear power supply - More get up and go - These things are quite subtle, but there.
I have done blind testing between the Battery power and Linear power on two people and both preferred the linear power!
I am waiting for my Ultrarendu to receive a SW update so I can try Qobuz and Spotify Lossless Connect, rather than the temperamental (for me) DLNA and mConnect app solution.
The connect solutions will not sound better than DLNA of course.
I might try the Topping D10s to do the USB to SPdif convertion as that unit measured extremely well on a Audio Science Review test.
The Wiim Pro streamer with its Qobuz and Spotify lossless functions perform amazingly well.
Very stable streaming connection and easy to use, sounds very good too!
